Jane Fenton-May

Jane, who lives in Wenvoe, has over 30 years experience of working in the NHS in Wales. She trained as a GP in the 70's and recently became a part-time partner in a busy GP practice in Cardiff's Butetown.

She has worked with muscular dystrophy patients of all ages across Wales via the Welsh Genetic Sevice. Until last year she was part-time co-ordinator of the Wales Neuromuscle Network, whose aim was to improve services, knowledge and research into neuromuscular disease in Wales. Jane has a special interest in the palliative care of patients with progressive neurodegenerative conditions and the care of rare hereditary muscle diseases.

Jane has been a member of the Tŷ Hafan Board since 2003, has a keen interest in medical politics and has been awarded a fellowship of the BMA as well as the Royal College of General Practioners. In her spare time she enjoys working in her garden and spending time with her family including her 3 now adult children.

"My work as a doctor both with muscle disease and in general practice means I have been involved with families who live with life limiting conditions and bereavement. I see the burden of care and the adjustments that have to be made to manage severe progressive debility. When a child is affected the affect can be devastating on parents, siblings and the extended family. Tŷ Hafan is wonderful resource that can tailor specialist care and support for the individual child with a life threatening condition and their family, which includes respite care and post bereavement family support. I am proud to be involved with Tŷ Hafan as I know that we can make the crucial difference which enables families to cope."
