A father described the realities of caring for a life-limited child and how Tŷ Hafan’s support has been “life-changing” for his family at a fundraising event which raised more than £5,000 for the charity.
Peter Russ’s 17-year-old son, Connor, suffers from a genetic disorder, epilepsy and cerebral palsy and was referred to Tŷ Hafan a year after the charity started in 1999.
Peter and his wife, Sharon, from Templeton in Pembrokeshire, attended a Chefs’ Night Out pop-up event at The Grove in Narberth which saw three Michelin-starred chefs cook an exquisite six-course menu for guests at the award-winning west Wales restaurant.
Connor, who has complex medical needs and requires 24-hour care, is due to visit Tŷ Hafan in a couple of weeks. His mum, Sharon, said: “Tŷ Hafan helps us to recuperate and recharge our batteries. The short-break care gives us a chance to have a rest and spend time with our younger son, Logan, who also loves staying at Tŷ Hafan.”
Peter said: “Tŷ Hafan has done so much for our family and it was a real honour to speak about the care and support they have given our family over the years.
“When we were first told about Tŷ Hafan, we thought it would be a place full of doom and gloom but we couldn’t have been more wrong. It’s full of life and joy and they make us feel accepted.
“It was a fantastic event and we are truly humbled by the generosity of the guests and the three marvellous chefs whose time and contributions will make such a difference to more families like ours.”
The Grove's Duncan Barham was joined by Michelin star holder, Hywel Jones of Lucknam Park, along with James Sommerin who returned for a second year after opening his hugely acclaimed restaurant in Penarth.
All the chefs, including Duncan, gave their time and ingredients free of charge for the fundraising evening to ensure that Tŷ Hafan, the family hospice for young lives, can continue to provide care and support to life-limited children, young people and their families from across Wales.
