help children like saul by signing up to tŷ hafan’s rainbow run

With only a few weeks to go until Tŷ Hafan’s Pendine Sands Rainbow Run, a Carmarthen family who uses the charity’s services is encouraging more people to sign up to the colourful fundraising event so that the charity can help more families in need of support.

Ten-year-old Saul Fernandes from Johnstown is one of a number of children who, until recently, had not actually stayed at Tŷ Hafan but he, and his family have accessed some of the outreach services on offer.

Saul suffers from Cerebral Palsy and Epilepsy and although unable to walk or talk ‘Super Saul’ – as nicknamed by his family – is a cheeky and happy young man who brings much joy to his family.

Because of his interest in music, Saul has enjoyed a number of sessions with Tŷ Hafan’s qualified music therapist, Diane Wilkinson, who visits the family regularly at home.

“Music therapy draws on a young person’s imagination to help them experience an improved quality of life,” said Diane who has been with Tŷ Hafan for the last 15 years.

“Saul loves songs and nursery rhymes and beams when he hears them. He also enjoys listening to the flute and really relaxes to its sound. When Saul’s health hasn’t been as good, we have used the sessions to help him relax him I play lots of flute and sing songs so that he can just lie back and let the music wash over him. The sessions have really benefitted Saul and his mum and dad have really enjoyed them as well.”

Saul recently had his first short stay at Tŷ Hafan – the hospice for children in Wales – with his mum, dad and older brother, Jo.

Saul’s mum, Louise, said: “Although Saul was quite poorly, we had a really nice time. The staff are wonderful and it’s such a happy and colourful place. Saul adored the playground and we are now looking forward to our next visit.

“We would encourage as many people as possible to take part in the Rainbow Run so Tŷ Hafan can help more families like ours.”

There are still spaces left for the Rainbow Run on Saturday 26 September, which has been kindly supported by Jane Hodge.

Entry is £10 each or £7 per person for groups of five or more, with a minimum sponsorship of £50 per person. The charity is also looking for a number of people to help with volunteering roles including paint throwing.

The charity would like to thank Ajuda, Ants Hill, L'Oréal, Narberth and Whitland Round Table, 9Bar and Princes Gate for supporting the event. Tŷ Hafan would also like to thank Rapid Relief Team for their support in marshalling the event.
