A team of Thomas Carroll charity cyclists tackled a 295-mile bike ride from London to Paris to raise enough funds to pay for a whole day of palliative care at Tŷ Hafan.
Covering 74 miles a day, the dedicated team raised more than £10,000 to help Tŷ Hafan support life-limited children and their families from across Wales.
Starting in London on 16 September, the charity riders cycled through southern England, arriving in Dover on day one, before embarking on the ferry to Calais in northern France.
Finishing at the Eiffel Tower on 20 September, Paul Evans, Account Manager and team captain for the bike ride, said: “Our goal was to raise over £10,000 – the cost of providing all of Tŷ Hafan’s palliative care services for 24 hours, not only at the hospice itself, but its work supporting children and their families in communities throughout Wales.
“We are great supporters of Tŷ Hafan’s Pay for a Day scheme, and we have chosen 1 October, the anniversary of Thomas Carroll’s founding in 1972, as our special day of care at the hospice.
“Riding 74 miles a day with a team of mixed cycling experience was a challenge, but the incredible team spirit and the vital cause, pulled us through.”
Wendy Collie, Business and Community Fundraiser at Tŷ Hafan, said: “Without the public’s generous support, we simply would not be able to care for the hundreds life-limited children and families in our care.
“Thomas Carroll’s fundraising efforts has been nothing short of inspirational. Staff have raised a significant amount for Tŷ Hafan over the years and their latest fundraising achievement will go a long way in helping life-limited children and their families make the most of the precious time they have left together.”
Staff from Thomas Carroll joined children and their families for a party at the hospice in Sully to celebrate paying for a day of care at Tŷ Hafan.
Tŷ Hafan needs to raise £10,194 a day to provide comfort, care and support to families with children who are sadly expected to die in childhood. The support includes specialist care at its state-of-the-art hospice in the Vale of Glamorgan as well as its vital work in the family home, hospital and at schools throughout Wales.
