Champagne flowed, music played and jewels dazzled as Cardiff Bay was transported back to the roaring twenties for the Tŷ Hafan Great Gatsby Ball.
Two hundred guests partied the night away until the early hours at the lavishly-themed black tie event at St David’s Hotel & Spa in Cardiff Bay to raise tens of thousands of pounds to help children with life-limiting conditions and their families.
And as mum Bridget James delivered a powerful speech about her experience caring for her five-year-old daughter Elain, who has a rare heart condition, she presented a surprise £4,000 cheque to thank staff at the Sully-based hospice, bringing the total for her fundraising activities to £25,000.
“Elain loves Tŷ Hafan. They are a lifeline for us and help us create special memories which we’ll cherish forever,” said Bridget.
“We are able to relax at Tŷ Hafan and do the normal things that other families may take for granted. It can be difficult at times, but knowing that Tŷ Hafan is there for us is such a comfort.
“We would like to thank Tŷ Hafan for all they do for us and are so grateful they are with us on our journey.
“One thing I do know is that I am going to bed tonight absolutely sure that I was put on this earth to be Elain’s Mummy. Despite all the heartache it has brought, the overwhelming feelings of love, protection and pride counteract the pain 10 times over.
Welsh Conservatives leader Andrew RT Davies tweeted:
“As much as I complain that my life has been turned upside down in the last five years, I would do it all over again in a heartbeat for my girl, my Elain, my family. Today my love for Elain is stronger than ever.”
Sponsored by Bartholomew Hawkins, the event was hosted by Paralympian Mark Colbourne MBE and attended by representatives from Cardiff City Football Club, Arriva Trains Wales, Hugh James, Blake Morgan and Golley Slater among many more.
Voices for Change added:
Raising more than £26,000 for Tŷ Hafan on the night, the Gatsby Ball also included a casino and auction, with prizes ranging from a tour of the Aston Martin factory as part of the James Bond package to a week’s holiday in Majorca and Mediterranean Cruise for two.
Many guests took to Twitter to show their support, both during and after the event.
PR director Alastair Milburn tweeted: “Really good atmosphere at @tyhafan 's #gatsbyball - with great friends at @C_S_Group”.
