Angharad, a young fundraiser, visited us this week. She took part in the Tenby Junior Long Course Challenge for us (1.2 mile swim on Friday, 42m cycle on Saturday and 10k run on Sunday) this year for the first time, having been waiting two years to be old enough when she reached 14. She has chosen to support us because her mum supports Tŷ Hafan.
Whilst Angharad was fundraising in Tenby, Tŷ Hafan started its own long course weekend of events and activities.
Cardiff City Football Club did us proud as their charity of the night in the preseason match against Taffs Wells on Friday. The manager, Neil Warnock, gave a heartfelt talk on Tŷ Hafan following his visit. The club announced: “A wonderful evening at Rhiw’r Ddar raising money and awareness for Tŷ Hafan”.
We were approached by Boom Cymru, who are producing a program for S4C where contestants search for an item in a charity shop, buy it, then upcycle it to sell – the winner is the person who makes the most money. S4C filmed in Lampeter, and one of the contestants is a volunteer in Aberystwyth. S4C will showcase Tŷ Hafan retail and we’re interested to hear about Handcrafted by Tŷ Hafan!
On Friday, a group of Tŷ Hafan mums and dads set off in a coach for the inaugural summer trip to Tenby.
Our ambassador Leigh Halfpenny and his family met families and staff in the Hospice after a tough week of training with the Wales team. Leigh’s baby daughter Lilly had loads of Cwtchs and a lovely Tŷ Hafan personalised handcrafted bag. Leigh was able to spend time with Izzy Withers who you will remember from my blog last week went viral on social media with the cast of Gavin and Stacey. Invaluable memories.
The Sully Friends of Tŷ Hafan held their 25 year Tŷ Hafan Ball on Saturday. Hayley Burke made a moving speech about James and Sarah Meacham who were also attending. We are so grateful for our friends groups who have tirelessly supported Tŷ Hafan and continue to fundraise for a cause so close to their hearts.
Sunday saw 57 supporters glitter up for Tŷ Hafan to run and cheer at the first Porthcawl 10k in fabulous sunshine. Jeremy Miles, AM for Neath, joined our runners, saying: “They provide amazing care for children and their families right across south Wales and beyond. And the face glitter was a first too.“
Meanwhile a team from Quantum Advisory cycled over 50 miles along the Taff Trail and raised over £4,000!
We support the whole family and especially siblings, often young carers themselves. This weekend we organised a Supersibs sports day where everyone got a good soaking!!
I look forward to visits from Mair Davies, Trustee of Maggies, and the senior Bobath team to discuss opportunities for collaboration.
Helen Young in our community team had a lovely letter thanking her for taking the trouble of sending a handwritten thank you card. Helen’s care and gratitude was appreciated. With this in mind, I look forward to joining the team in writing letters of thanks today.
