Barry Island, Friars Road, Barry CF62 5TR

The location has changed to the Eastern shelter this year to allow space for large crowds. The dip will take part in the centre of the beach as usual.

What time is the dip?

To dip will commence at 12:30pm

Do I have to register in advance?

Registration is now closed and we will NOT be taking registration on the day.

What are the registration options?

Registration is now closed and we will not be taking registration on the day.

Will there be parking available?

There are pay & display car parks available. Please bear in mind that traffic will be busy so please leave yourself plenty of time to attend the event. You can find the car parks available here

https://www.valeofglamorgan.gov.uk/en/living/Parking/Coastal-Car-Parking-Charges.aspx

How busy does the event get?

Last year the event attracted 2,000 participants and 3,000 spectators. Therefore, please allow plenty of time to park and get ready, ahead of the dip set-off time.

If previous years are anything to go by it will get very busy, so you should allow plenty of time to park and get ready, ahead of the dip set-off time.

What should I wear?

You can wear whatever you want and many people do wear fancy dress- there is no theme but there is a prize for the best costume. Please make sure that if you are wearing fancy dress that you ensure it is suitable to enter the water with.

What do I need to bring with me?

You must bring with you your wristband that you would have received in the post. If you are picking up your wristband then you need to head to the registration area under the Eastern Shelter.
We advise that you also bring a spare change of clothes, hat and gloves and a towel to wrap round you as soon as you come out of the water.

What happens if I have lost my wristband?

You will need to come to the information tent on the Eastern Shelter.

Can I run into the water?

Yes. You can run or walk. There will be a large funnel so please head to the front should you wish to run into the water. If you are wearing fancy dress, please ensure that you are not wearing anything that may cause you or others to trip up. We do advise that you enter the water slowly to allow your body to get use to the changes in temperature.

Will there be bag storage?

Unfortunately, Ty Hafan will not be providing bag storage. However, you can hire out the beach huts on the island from the Vale of Glamorgan Council. We also advise that you come with a spectator who can look after your belongings.

Will there be anything to eat or drink?

Nearby shops and Cafes will be open so you can get something to eat or drink before and after the event.

Do I have to fully sub-merge?

Traditionally, participants run in and dunk under 3 times and run out, then repeat 2 more times but we won't make you do this - simply entering the water is brave in our opinion.

Will I receive a medal?

Only those that have signed up for the £5.50 option will receive a medal. You will have a bespoke colour on your identity wristband that will help the events team to hand you a medal.

How long can I stay in the water for?

We advise no longer than 10 minutes in the water due to safety reasons.

How can I be safe in the water and what is cold water shock?

Please refer back to the home page on water safety and how to avoid cold water shock.

What happens if I have a medical condition?

Please consult with your doctor if you suffer with any pre medical conditions before signing up. Please do not take part if you are not feeling 100% well and if in doubt, seek medical advice from a doctor. The event is not suitable for those who might be adversely affected by the cold and we thank Ajuda Medical and the lifeguards who will be on hand to assist with any medical incidents.

Who should not take part in this event?

The particular physiological affects of cold water mean there are some conditions where you should either avoid a festive dip, or seek medical advice before considering it:

  • Pregnant
  • If you suffer with any cardiovascular disease
  • Asthma or other respiratory conditions
  • Poorly-controlled hypertension

Do I have to raise money for charity?
