There is never a dull moment working in the lottery department at Tŷ Hafan. With over 40,000 members all paying £1 a week by various methods (direct debit, cash collection, cheque, single tickets in our shops, the list goes on and on)…it’s a real job to get everything penny perfect in time for the draw every Friday afternoon. Sadly, there is no big draw machine like you see on the National lottery, just a computer system that picks out our winners!
Part of my role is to call the £2,000 winner after the draw has taken place to tell them the good news. Most are completely shocked and can’t believe the news. My favourite phone call to make is to the winner of our rollover when it reaches its maximum £12,000. It only happens once or twice a year and is really a life-changing amount of money, so delivering that news to the lucky person is very special.
The lottery provides a vital source of reliable income for Tŷ Hafan, raising over £1.1 million each year towards the cost of care services. Being situated right next to the hospice we get to see exactly where the money goes and often meet the children and families we support. All those stressful Fridays are more than worth it to know what a difference is being made.
