shelley’s royal visit

Having worked for Tŷ Hafan for nearly five years, I have been a part of some very exciting things: the annual family fun day, shop openings and taken part in some amazing events such as the Midnight Sleep Walk. In my role as Business and Community Fundraiser for West Wales, I have met some incredible fundraisers, organisations and generous businesses.

One of the businesses that has supported us is Valero in Pembroke, who has donated over £60,000 in recent years.

The Pembroke Refinery was officially opened in 1964 by Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother and this year celebrates the Refinery’s 50th anniversary. I was very lucky to be invited to attend the birthday celebrations along with one of our volunteer ambassadors, Toni Lucas. The birthday celebrations gave the refinery the opportunity to highlight the prosperity the Refinery has brought to the county, through employment and community engagement.

The event was also attended by two very important guests… a ROYAL visit by The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. I was very excited, but equally as nervous about the idea of meeting the royals.

Shelley royal visit

As guests, we were very well looked after by Valero and the time waiting for the royals to arrive seemed to fly with fantastic entertainment and delicious locally sourced food. Before we knew it, it was time to meet the special guests.

Toni and I stood patiently (nervously) in line. Whilst William had one side of the room to meet, my side of the room had the glowing Kate. It was genuinely an honour to get to tell her all about Tŷ Hafan and the families we support. I also invited the royal couple to come and pay us a visit, and suggested that little George would love our new playground.

I’m sure I kept the Duchess talking to us for much longer than I should have, but I often struggle to keep it brief when talking about the amazing work we do for the families we support, and the huge amount of money we need to raise every year to keep up the high levels of support we provide.

It was a great day and still can't believe we met the royals!
