So for years I have toyed with the idea of attempting to ‘run’ the Cardiff Half Marathon and for years I have put it off with always a great excuse: too busy, ‘there’s always next year’ attitude, getting pregnant and having Jack (that’s at least two years out, right?).
But the year of 2016 seemed just right…plus my lovely colleague, Emma, who is also taking up this challenge, is very persuasive and pushed me to hit the ‘Enter Now’ button.
With the half marathon on my bucket list and running not being one of my great loves, I have dug out my running shoes and vest and started pounding the pavements in a vain attempt of completing the 13 mile route of beautiful Cardiff!
I have worked for Tŷ Hafan for 14 years and, over those years, I have seen many people run marathons, organise coffee mornings, climb mountains, jump out of planes, cycle from one end of Wales to the other – all to raise money for the children and their families that come to Tŷ Hafan. I felt it was my turn to do something to support these amazing families who have inspired me over the years, so after a brief discussion with Emma we were signed up!
With only five weeks to go until the big day, we've upped the training, increased the distance and set up our Just Giving pages... knowing it will be so worth the sweat, blisters and tears when we cross that finish line having achieved our goal...a goal which seems insurmountable at the moment.
In the words of Paula Radcliffe, World Record Marathon Runner: “Never set limits, go after your dreams, don’t be afraid to push the boundaries. And laugh a lot – it’s good for you!”
We will definitely both be laughing a lot around the 13.1 mile course taking in the atmosphere as we go. Please look out for us in our Tŷ Hafan vests and give us a little motivational cheer, we will have the Tŷ Hafan mascot ‘Sully the Bear’ with us too so you can’t miss us!!
