The Mountain Daredevils are part of a team constructing new sheltered apartments for the elderly, and a library in Pontypridd. We know about the good work Tŷ Hafan do with children and their families, which is close to our hearts.
Many of us have regularly raised funds for the charity in the past so we thought it would be a good team bonding challenge for us to support our favourite charity by taking on the Welsh 3 Peaks Challenge.
26 of us took part from Jehu Group, Trivallis, Strong Partnership, NTJ Plasterers, and Cardiff City Supporters Club. We trained for six months in all weathers in the Brecon Beacons and North Wales.
We set off on Friday afternoon on a coach from Cardiff up to Betws y Coed to register for the event. We then set our alarms for 3am(!) Saturday morning to be at the start of Snowdon ready to go for 4am. The conditions were perfect as we set off in the dark and all six teams managed to complete Snowdon in four hours.
Cadair Idris was next. Setting off in the blazing sun and with no breeze, the conditions took its toll on climbers as they negotiated the steep slopes, pushing themselves to the limit. The marshals and volunteers were great encouraging and supporting the climbers along the way, and the views were stunning. The last of our team finished Cadair Idris in a very respectable five hours.
Finally it was time for Pen-y-Fan. Again we arrived in high temperature, it was like walking in a furnace but we forced ourselves up the mountainside, driven on by the families this money would help, and we made it, completing the challenge. Many of the team were emotional at the end but also elated, sharing this elation and joy with family members who had turned up to support them.
This was a great challenge that tested our physical and mental strength. To date we have raised £7,600.00 in sponsorship. It was a well organised event and thank you to the marshals and volunteers whose support was crucial to us on the day.
