Today Tŷ Hafan's lottery team is proud to host its 1,000th lottery draw, in the same year the charity celebrates 18 years since the hospice first opened its doors to children with life-limiting conditions and their families.
There’s never one day the same, working in the lottery team. Each week is like a whirlwind of talking to people in the community about the lottery, processing our fantastic new members onto the system, collating all the tickets sold in the shop and many more things, all in preparation for the draw each Friday.
When everything is prepared, the team all gather around. We try to guess where the winner will be from and if the rollover will be won while the computer selects our lucky winners.
After the draw, I get to make the call to tell the Jackpot winner that they’re getting a cheque for £2,000! The reactions we get are priceless; most people are really shocked or think that it’s a hoax.
On occasion, I get to meet the winners. Most people want to spend their winnings on a something like a sofa or holiday, but we’ve had winners who wanted to buy a snake, a market stall pitch, a ferret and one that we got the cheque to just in time to book for an Elvis convention in Las Vegas!
The one thing that’s always the same is that they’ve all joined up to help Tŷ Hafan.
It never fails to overwhelm me with emotion when we’re able to give something back to amazing people who support Tŷ Hafan.
