Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales and Tŷ Hafan are about to embark on an exciting pilot partnership project supported by Children & the Arts, through their Start Hospices Programme. Start Hospices is a UK wide Programme that creates opportunities for children and their families to have therapeutic arts experiences outside of the hospice environment, creating happy memories with their families.
We want to build relationships between the Museum, the hospice and families, by working together to plan and deliver an afternoon of Museum based fun at the hospice, followed by an exciting Family day at National Museum Cardiff. By doing this we want to provide young people and their families the opportunity to make happy memories together, and we want to increase families’ confidence in visiting the Museum independently. We also want staff from the Museum and hospice to learn from each other so that we can continue to find ways to work together collaboratively in the future.
So far we have assembled a crack team of Museum and hospice staff, and have spent time getting to know each other, how we work how and exploring our different buildings (including having a go on the wheelchair trampoline at the hospice!). We are also working with Dave from KeyCreate, a firm favourite with families at the hospice, who will bring his own unique brand of inclusive creative, music and sensory play to National Museum Cardiff for the Family Fun Day.
Plans are coming together; first an afternoon Dinosaur extravaganza will take place at the hospice. This will bring Museum collections to life at Tŷ Hafan, through arts and crafts, storytelling, and handling real-life fossils. Then there’ll be a day of exploring at National Museum Cardiff, where families will go Wild at the Museum, by taking part in an adventure through the Museum’s collections.
Keep an eye out on upcoming #FamilyFriday blogs to find out more about what we’ve been up to.
