a battle of attrition

It’s kind of been a big year…

About a year ago we had a little baby girl. Not long after that I left my job of over 15 years to set up my own graphic design business. Plus I was also fundraising for Tŷ Hafan by training for a 100 mile winter Ultra Marathon called the Arc of Attrition. It’s been a very busy time…

I’ve always had close links to Tŷ Hafan as it was my previous company’s chosen charity and I’ve had the privilege to visit there numerous times to see the amazing work they do. Now having a baby girl too everything seemed even more important. So it was an easy decision for me to continue with Tŷ Hafan as my chosen charity going forward with my new business.

The Arc of Attrition is a 100 mile Ultra Marathon around the South West Coastal Trail at the beginning of February. Training had gone very well, but with the worst of timing a virus struck me down a few days before I was due to travel down to Cornwall. It took me about a month to get over it, and was back running but very tired and had lost my fitness, so it was like starting again.

Having already raised money for this charity run that didn’t happen, I set about finding a replacement challenge that would fulfil my commitment. I was already entered into Newport Marathon as it’s my home town marathon and someone jokingly said why don’t you just run it four times that’ll be about 100 miles…

So I thought about it and although not pretty trails or brutal coastal paths, it seemed the perfect physical and mental challenge. I didn’t need to travel or stay over night or enter any other events… and I had plenty of support from friends and family and my running club – Lliswerry Runners.

It’s now just over a week away and I’m back fit and looking forward to the challenge and more importantly raising more awareness and much needed funds for Tŷ Hafan! Look out for me on telly, as this year the Newport Marathon will be televised by Eurosport.
