Ty Hafan

#family friday

many hands make light work!

Our Bridgend Distribution Centre has had some major love over the past week with a transformation from top to bottom thanks to a team of incredible apprentices from Western Power Distribution.

In just four days, thirty three Western Power Distribution (WPD) employees gave our warehouse in Bridgend a complete makeover, and thanks to their donation of time and skills, made changes that will make the world of difference to the way we supply stock to our Tŷ Hafan shops in Wales.

As part of the WPD apprentice community scheme, Tŷ Hafan was lucky enough to be picked as the charity to support this year, and we welcomed skilled workers from various departments in the company who all had brilliant skills to offer.

The coordinator of the WPD scheme and trainer, Darren Barry, said:
“Each year, our apprentices take on a community project and this year we were delighted to work with Tŷ Hafan and make some positive changes to the distribution centre facilities.
The aim of each project is to provide a valuable resource to a local charity while giving the apprentices an opportunity to expand their skills in a setting which is often so different to their normal work day.”

Some of the team sorted raw stock into the relevant distribution bays while other staff boarded out the newly emptied bays to make better use of the existing storage. Another team created a shelving unit from scratch which will make the turnaround of stock easier for the shops and a new PAT testing station was built so that electrical items could be sorted and tested ready for the shelves.

They also created a brand-new enclosed area in the warehouse dedicated to operating a mini eBay selling shop.

Collectively, the team sorted 725 bags of clothes into men’s, women’s and children’s categories — and with each bag of clothes roughly amounting to £30, they’ve technically prepared stock that will amount to a staggering £21,180 for Tŷ Hafan.

Our retail distribution manager, Kevin Shanahan, said:
“It was an absolute pleasure to work with the WPD team last week. On behalf of Tŷ Hafan and all the families who are supported by our services, I cannot thank WPD enough for the transformation they have made to the warehouse.
The sorting that they’ve done means that we can keep replenishing our shops with fresh stock much quicker and generate much needed income to provide front-line care to children and their families.”

Also, we were delighted to see that the staff had a fun time too, and experimented with a couple of interesting outfits!

But also, before the team left, we made sure that they left their stamp on the warehouse and they left their painted hand prints on one of the walls as a lasting reminder of their brilliant work.

Thanks so much, guys! Top work.
