Ty Hafan

#family friday

deep freeze

I’m Gary Thompson and I have entered the 6633 Arctic Ultra Race for Tŷ Hafan! This event involves walking or running 380miles in nine days - approximately 42.5 miles every day!

The race is in the top ten of the toughest challenges to undertake in the world – and I will be attempting it in March 2021.

This challenge involves walking from Eagle Plain in north Canada to the village of Tuktoyaktuk in the Arctic Circle, in temperatures that could sometimes be as low as -70 degrees centigrade with the wind chill.

Well, I have started my training!!

I am lucky to live at the foot of the Brecon Beacons, so six days a week, normally at about 5.30am I start my “tab”(which is a pace between a walk and a run).

I go straight up the nearest mountain which is called “The Bryn” - this is approximately five miles and when I have reached the top, I shall descend and turn around and go back up!!

This at the moment is building my stamina (I also wear a rucksack which I have filled with my wife’s old home and interiors magazines!!!) Not sure if she’s noticed they have disappeared!

It is going to be a long hard slog, but I am determined to get myself in the right shape physically and, more importantly, mentally.

Having completed The Marathon Des Sables (Marathon of the Sand), which was 220km across the Sahara Desert, back in 1998, I know how important remaining mentally strong is. It will be technically a race, but I will be happy to complete the challenge - every year only a few of the participants finish! Last year six finished out of the 15 who started. One year nobody finished!

I can not think of a better charity to raise money for than Tŷ Hafan.

This is going to be long journey and I shall keep you up to date on how my training is going.
