Referral criteria

We offer our service to all children in Wales who have a life-limiting condition that is likely to result in their death before the age of 19. Life-limiting conditions are those for which there is no reasonable hope of cure and from which the children or young people will die.

Children and young persons referred to Tŷ Hafan could have a wide range of conditions or even clusters of symptoms as yet undiagnosed. We have cared for children with rare genetic disorders, congenital abnormalities, progressive neurological conditions and irreversible organ failure. Some examples are Cystic Fibrosis, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, Battens Disease, Mucopolysaccaridoses, severe Cerebral Palsy and children with multiple disabilities. We also accept children with cancer where the child is no longer responding to treatment.

We accept referrals at all stages of a child's condition - including the very early stages. We'll step in as early as necessary.
