Today sees the start of Sustainable Fashion Week and the charity shops run by Tŷ Hafan Children’s Hospice are hoping for another bumper trading period.

The charity’s 18 shops are located across West, South and East Wales and income generated by sales accounts for almost one fifth of the total income needed to run Tŷ Hafan’s hospice and services.

Laura James, Tŷ Hafan’s Head of Retail, says: “It costs Tŷ Hafan £5.6m a year – equivalent to £15,275 every day – to provide care and support for children with life-shortening conditions and their families in Wales.

“So every good quality item that you donate to one of our shops, every item that you buy from one of our shops, or from us online, really makes a difference to the lives of the children we support.”

In the past 12 months:

  • Tŷ Hafan’s charity shops received about 1,900 bags of donated stock each week. This equates to nearly 100,000 bags of unwanted items (clothing and non-clothing) throughout the year that might otherwise have ended up in landfill
  • Tŷ Hafan’s shops sold more than 240,000 items of pre-loved clothing, 20,000 pairs of nearly new shoes and over 15,000 pre-owned handbags
  • A further 120,000kg of donated textiles, shoes and bags which were not good enough to be resold were responsibly recycled via Tŷ Hafan’s shops
  • By reselling and recycling Tŷ Hafan has kept approximately 220,000kg of clothing from ending up in landfill
