Welcome to our CEO's most recent blog post all about what went on at Tŷ Hafan last week!

The annual remembrance service on Saturday was conducted by Tracy with more children’s names added to stones which now nestle below the stunning new water feature. Tracy read out each of the nearly 400 names in turn, with Birdsong playing in the background. Each child is remembered, reminding us of how we support families over a span of over 20 years. I'm also very grateful to our Chairman Martin Davies for coming to the service and showing his support. You can read some comments and see pictures from the day by clicking here

Congratulations to Tracy and Haydn on the memorial garden. Many families, volunteers, and staff have commented on the beauty and appropriateness of the water feature. The whole play team have asked me to pass on their praise to Lee for his hard work. Tŷ Hafan truly is a Haven.

On Sunday we celebrated the commitment of our volunteers to Tŷ Hafan with nearly 150 guests by holding a tea party. We gave out awards and prizes of a weekend hotel stay for volunteers in care, retail and events thanks to the Room to Reward volunteer scheme. Thank you to the HR Volunteer team and the staff who supported the event on the day and, of course, a special thank you to our volunteers! We are actively recruiting for more volunteers so we can do even more for families.

The events team held the first Rainbow Dash in partnership with Carmarthen Council on Wednesday, with support from local Tŷ Hafan families. The aim is to engage secondary school children from mainstream and special schools in a 3k colour dash to help build confidence and wellbeing. The feedback was immense with particular praise for Tŷ Hafan as a charity partner from Actif Sport and Leisure. The children fundraised and the event helped to raise our profile in the area with excellent local coverage, whilst delivering a day to remember. The camaraderie in the Tŷ Hafan team was second to none and I felt proud to be part of a team spanning Events, Marketing and Fundraising who just enjoy working together.

Whilst the event was unfolding, Dani from PR and Marketing, after much perseverance, received a message from the cast of Gavin and Stacey for one our Tŷ Hafan teenagers, Izzy, who is staying with us. We took a video of Izzy’s reaction as she watched her message and it was brilliant. Izzy and her mum were overwhelmed and asked for the reaction video to be shared on social media. What followed was a message from James Corden and over 200k views on social media. Memories for Izzy and her family which will never be forgotten.

As if this wasn’t enough, Diane Stringer and Laura Chick in Supporter Care hosted an impromptu visit from a couple from Yorkshire. They had spoken to Gaynor Perch, a volunteer in our Penarth shop, who was so enthusiastic about the charity that they took her advice and came to see the hospice. After a tour, they decided to give a gift of £100k from their aunt’s will to Tŷ Hafan! Congratulations to Di, Laura and Gaynor for making such an impression. Another example of what great collaboration and a passion for what we do can achieve.

Sophie, our Transition Nurse, and Meg, our Consultant, hosted a workshop for adult palliative care professionals in Swansea and Cwm Taff. The feedback was excellent and is another example how we influence pathways for Tŷ Hafan youngsters who face the daunting challenge of transitioning to adult services.

Hospice dad, Matthew Revitt, held a fundraising variety show in Newbridge, near Blackwood, on Saturday evening. It was a great night with dozens of children taking part, and about 250 in the audience. They showed a video about Tŷ Hafan before the second half started. Matthew, who directed the show, would like to pop down to the hospice and present the money in a couple of weeks.

Peter Lynn and Partners Golf Day was a fantastic success, with over 100 golfers signed up to help raise funds. We raised over £6,500 on the day and Peter has further plans to raise more later in the year and hopes to pay for a day.

Volunteer Linda in our Maesteg shop is involved in a golf day in September at Coed y Mwster and looks like it will be a great fund raising opportunity, so thank you to Laura James and shop manager Amanda for setting her up with the fundraising team.

We look forward to welcoming our Ambassador Leigh Halfpenny for coffee on Wednesday, the Cardiff City FC preseason fundraiser for Tŷ Hafan at Taff’s Wells on Friday, the Sully Friend’s 20 year celebration Ball on Saturday night, the Tŷ Hafan mums and dads inaugural summer coach trip to Tenby, the siblings annual sports day and the Porthcawl 10k! There is plenty to get involved with in what will be another busy week at Tŷ Hafan.
