barry island new year's day dip

Jump in to the New Year with a dip

The annual dip has been going for 35 years, originally organised by the Whitmore Bay lifeguards in 1985 and growing in size ever since. From 2019 Tŷ Hafan Children’s hospice is delighted to be adopting the swim and thanks the amazing Rob Salter for handing over the reins.
We hope we can continue to grow this wonderful event, whilst raising invaluable funds for the hospice, offering comfort, care and support to children with life-limiting conditions and their families.

barry new years day swim

In 1985 just 6 people entered the water as part of a New Years Eve bet, but now over 500 participants take the refreshing plunge and thousands of spectators fill the promenade.

Please pre-register for the dip free of charge from this page (you can register on the day but we encourage pre-registration to avoid queues and allow us to better plan for numbers).
Check-in on-the-day opens at 11am and everyone gets in the water at 12pm.

You can come in fancy dress if you wish (there will be a prize for best costume).

Registration is free but we will be asking everyone for a £5 optional donation at check-in – as a thank you, you'll receive a medal and a token for a lovely warm drink once you've been for your dip! We also ask that all participants try to fundraise for Tŷ Hafan in advance.

No matter how much you raise, we are so grateful for every penny. It all helps us make sure a short life is a full life.
