With 26 charity shops across Wales, Tŷ Hafan is a proud advocate of sustainable fashion. But this autumn we’ve decided to step it up a notch and embark on a mission to transform the way people buy their clothes — starting with a brand-new “sparkly” event!

Party pop-up

Christmas party season is just around the corner so we figured that this would be an opportune time for us to begin our mission, while people are in the market for a new sparkly outfit for their Christmas parties.

Searching for new outfits often leads to a day of high street shopping, or visiting online shops and adding every possible option in your basket, trying them all on at home before sending almost every item back in the post! So, we want help shoppers avoid fast fashion this party season and encourage everyone to consider the environmental impact before buying another cheaply-made dress online for the Christmas party.

But, we needed a bit of expert help on our mission. So, we’ve partnered with Cardiff stylist, Claire Rees, who set up ‘Upstyle Club’ this year after spending years as a personal stylist, and now helps women to move away from fast fashion, by running wardrobe sessions and styling clients using second-hand clothing including vintage and charity shops.

And, together, we’re very excited to launch a brand-new event: Party Pop-up at Tŷ Hafan.

It will take place on Thursday, 14 November at our Whitchurch store on Merthyr Road. We’ll be opening up the shop after hours for an exclusive event where fashion lovers will be able to buy stylist-picked, read-to-wear, quality items and labels for the party season in a range of sizes — all of which are donated garments. Claire will also be offering her expert tips on how to make eco-friendly style changes every day.

Claire, from Canton, who is a huge advocate for sustainable fashion by uploading her charity shop finds to social media @UpstyleClub, said:

"The party season is a perfect time to shop second-hand and help stop some of the £140 million pounds of clothes that go into landfill each year. The ‘slow fashion’ movement is growing, but there’s a way to go. Lots of people tell me they want to shop in charity shops but they think they don’t have the time. We want to show that wearing beautiful clothes doesn’t have to harm the planet and textile workers and that pre-loved fashion is accessible and affordable."

All pieces for the event have been hand-picked by Claire and will include a selection of party dresses, jumpsuits, skirts and accessories, some of which have never been worn!

Claire added:

"We’ve spent hours curating a collection of really special, pre-loved pieces, and we’ve found some real treasures. There’s a whole rail of retro party dresses, including some original 90s slip dresses by Tammy and St Michael and plenty of sparkle, beading and velvet.
"We have high street brands like Monsoon, Topshop and Hobbs, plus some pieces by independent designers, and a mix of vintage and modern urban looks. One of my favourites is a gorgeous hand-made teal evening gown with a puff sleeve."

Charity shops are gems for fashion finds and we feel very lucky to have such wonderful items donated to our Tŷ Hafan shops across Wales by the generous public every day.

We also hope the event will help introduce a new customer base to our shops, all while raising vital funds for life-limited children and their families we care for and support right across Wales. And who knows, maybe our Pop-up event could appear at a Tŷ Hafan shop near you in the future...

Limited tickets are available online and cost £10. However, £5 of this is redeemable on a purchase on the night.

The event will run from 6.30pm to 8.30pm and you'll be given a glass of fizz on arrival!
