a little "hello" from our new director of care

Meet Debbie Ho, our new Director of Care at the hospice. Deb has joined the team at quite a challenging and unique time, so not all of us have all had the chance to meet her in person yet! So here's Deb with a little "hello" for our staff and families.

Deb Ho

Back in December when I was offered the role of director of care, my starting date of mid-March seemed a long way away. I felt excited to be returning back to hospice care - a world I knew so well but had been away from for a little while. I could never have imagined at that time, how different the the world would become and the extent to which the coronavirus pandemic would change how we live.

I've become aware of how my independence has been restricted and how I have fewer choices and less control - yet I'm also mindful of how lucky I am. For the children and families who turn to Tŷ Hafan for care and support - coronavirus has made coping more difficult, days feel longer and life feel more isolated. That's why my first few weeks have been wholly focused on working with the skilled and experienced care team to make sure that the children and families we support know we are always there - just in a different way!

As we won't meet for a while, I thought I'd tell you a little about me. First off, I'm local - Barry born and bred. I'm thrilled to be closer to home and my family, and I can't wait for a time when the restrictions will be eased and I can spend more time with them.

I moved away from Barry when I was 18 to train as a nurse and up until 5 years ago, I'd spent most of my career as a Macmillan nurse and director of care at another hospice. In 2015, I joined Nationwide Building Society and worked to ensure that people who circumstances meant that managing their money was more difficult had access to the help and support they needed. During that time hospice care was still on my mind, so I became a trustee at Tŷ Hafan and gained a unique insight into its rich heritage and its unparalleled care.

Now I'm part of team Tŷ Hafan - and I couldn't be more thrilled. When life feels a bit more settled, look forward to meeting some of you. In the meantime, children and families will be at the heart of everything I do.

Debbie
