Ty Hafan
#family friday
Emily Harmsworth might be only 12, but she is taking on a massive fundraising challenge next month, in memory of little brother Peter, who was cared for by Tŷ Hafan. In this week’s Family Friday she explains why she is taking part in not just one, but four, sponsored walks.

When Emily Harmsworth heard about Tŷ Hafan’s new fundraiser Walk A Day in Their Shoes, with a choice of four distances to walk, she found she simply couldn’t choose between them.

But for the 12-year-old from Caerphilly, whose much-loved younger brother Peter passed away in 2019 at the age of nine, the dilemma didn’t last long – she decided to do all four of them!

She will be joined by dad Richard Harmsworth on each hike in September, and the pair are now busy planning their routes and getting in some practice.

Emily is already close to her fundraising target of £250 and is hoping to raise as much as she possibly can!

The Walk a Day in Their Shoes fundraising activity asks Tŷ Hafan supporters to walk in the shoes of one of our care team (who can walk up to 14,000 steps in an average shift) with a designated distance for each.

The four staff and distances to choose from are our dads’ support worker Dan – one mile; transition nurse Sophie – five miles; complementary therapist Katie – 10 miles and hospice nurse Claire – 15 miles.

Emily said: “I know all of them and couldn’t choose just one of them, so I decided to do all the walks to support all of them.

“I haven’t been old enough to take part in most of the Tŷ Hafan fundraising events till now, so I’m really excited about this one!”

Their mum Liz said Peter came to Tŷ Hafan from the age of one and loved his visits, although he was very firm in his opinions of who he liked caring for him!

“Peter really liked Sophie, she was there all the way through – he was very particular about who he liked!” she said.

Peter would have been 11 in September, making it a poignant time for the family, as they mark this birthday without him and walk a total of 31 miles in his memory.

Emily is planning to tackle the longest walk first, on the first Saturday in September, then take on one walk each weekend. For two of the walks, they are intending to walk to Peter’s school Trinity Fields in Ystrad Mynach and back. One of the routes will also take them to the top of Caerphilly Mountain!

Emily, who attends our Tŷ Hafan super siblings group, is really looking forward to the challenge and is determined to complete all four walks in new pink walking boots!

Richard added: “We have been part of the Tŷ Hafan family since Peter was one year old and even now 18 months after Peter passed, they are still providing us with support. We cannot thank them enough for everything they have done for us all over the past 10 years.”

Richard has also been supporting Tŷ Hafan by taking part in our sponsored zip wire event at Zipworld Tower in Hirwaun last weekend, despite being afraid of heights.

Now he and Emily are putting their best feet forward ready for her September fundraising challenge. If you would like to support Emily and Richard, please go to:
