Support for parents and carers

A parent or carer of a child with a life-shortening illness may find it difficult to open up about how they’re feeling. But speaking to someone outside your family or with a person going through similar circumstances could help a lot.

Support for families

Caring for child with a life-shortening illness can have a huge impact on a family’s wellbeing and mental health. We’re here to make sure families receive the all-round emotional support they need so they can have a good quality of life.

Family support team

Our dedicated team can work with your family to help you get the support you need as a whole unit and individually.

Family events

We organise a range of events and activities throughout the year to help TÅ· Hafan families meet and support each other and feel less alone.

Support for brothers and sisters

We know siblings of a child with a life-shortening condition may miss out on opportunities, have extra responsibilities and feel isolated. We provide specialist sibling support to help them feel better emotionally and have fun.

Family support team

We can offer confidential, one-to-one sessions with our sibling support worker or, if needed, a play therapist. This gives a sibling the chance to chat about and work through difficult feelings they may be experiencing.

Time with parents

We help siblings spend quality time with their mum and dads, which can be greatly beneficial to their mental health and wellbeing.

Support groups

We organise a range of age-appropriate support groups for siblings to help them meet new friends, build up confidence and improve their emotional wellbeing.

Bereavement days

We host bereavement days just for siblings to help them talk about and cope with the death of a brother or sister.

It’s cool chatting to someone who knows what you’re going through. I really like hanging out with my friend and we both love The Den!

- Rhys, who is living with Duchenne muscular dystrophy

Iwan gets to attend play sessions and meet other siblings. TÅ· Hafan organises for him to be taken swimming, and they sometimes go to the pictures, which we cannot do. He enjoys it all and has made some very good friends there.

- Julie

I’ve been part of the dads’ group since last summer and we have become a close knit yet very open group. We don’t sit in a circle and talk about our feelings. We don’t have to. We all have this mutual understanding and find solace from the group.

- Brad

Counselling has helped me express the way I’m feeling to my parents. I’ve had a lot of anxiety and fears about being in the house on my own because I’m not as mobile anymore.

We are accessing family support, and my husband and I are both accessing counselling now, through the hospice. My husband kind of shuts down a lot of the time, but they’ve got this magic knack. They just get it. They get everything.

Meeting other families is beneficial. It gives you opportunities to share and not feel so alone

The family support and sibling support really helps. It gives us family time and couple time. Someone to talk to who understands, can explain things and understands the fear.

So, so important for not only our children but for us as parents, our marriage, and for siblings too.
