Your questions answered

What is the application process?

All applications are submitted via our careers webpage using the ‘apply now’ button on the vacancy advert. The advert will include a job description and person specification, detailing the role and candidate requirements. Once the vacancy has closed, all applications will be reviewed and scored using the person specification criteria. We use a technique called ‘blind shortlisting’ to ensure we do not make any assumptions or form any unconscious bias around applications. Following shortlisting, we'll be in touch to let you know if you have been successful or not in securing an interview. We'll normally contact you by email.

What is the interview process?

All candidates will undertake at least one interview with competency-based questions. Other assessments may also be used as part of the interview process. If you’re successful in securing an interview, you’ll receive full details about the interview and assessment process. This is so you’ll know what to expect and how to prepare for your interview. This information will normally be sent via email.

What is a competency-based interview?

A competency-based interview is a way of evaluating if a candidate’s skills and competencies align with the essential requirements of the role outlined in the person specification. Competency-based interviews work on the principle that past performance is the best predictor of future behaviour. The questions are designed for you to provide evidence of your skills and experience, for example, “Can you give an example of when…?”, “Tell us about a time when you…”. A good way to structure your answers is to use the STAR technique: Situation – briefly outline the situation Task – what was your objective/task? Action – what did you do? how did you do it? Result – what was the outcome, impact and what did you learn?

If my interview is successful, when can I start my new role?

We’ll discuss and agree on a start date with you when we verbally offer you the role. If you’re joining our care team, we’ll complete your pre-employment checks before agreeing to start date with you. We’ll send you an offer letter outlining everything we require from you before you can start working at Tŷ Hafan. If you have any questions, our friendly People Services team are available at careers@tyhafan.org or on 029 2053 2304. Once a start date has been agreed upon, we’ll send you a contract of employment.

What is the induction process?

When you start at Tŷ Hafan, you’ll have an induction plan that’s tailored for your new role. This will help you to settle into your position and work at Tŷ Hafan. You’ll also be invited to a welcome event, where you’ll meet other new employees and hear from representatives from different parts of the charity. If you’re joining our care team, you’ll also have a set period of supernumerary status. This means you’ll not be a member of staff straight away and instead have placements to learn and practise skills safely, as well as gain confidence. You’ll be fully supported during this time by different mentors, who will buddy up with you on a weekly basis. You’ll also be assessed against a set of work-based competencies. This will determine if you can start providing one-to-one care.  

Can I obtain feedback from my application or interview if I’m not successful?

We’ll endeavour to give feedback if you attend an interview but are not offered a role. This feedback will include helpful advice and tips, such as using the STAR technique. Unfortunately, due to the large amount of applications we typically receive for each role we advertise, we’re unable to give feedback regarding applications that don’t make our initial short-list.
