This Sunday, over 200 people will run the Cardiff Half Marathon for Tŷ Hafan – a record number of entrants for our charity for this event and together they have raised more than £60,000 so far.
Among them are Tŷ Hafan’s Chief Executive Irfon Rees and Healthcare Support Worker and nursing student Dawn Goman.
A number of relatives of children and young people supported by Tŷ Hafan are also running, including Heidi Perkins, who is running in memory of her nephew Matthew, and, Becky Davies, who is running in memory of her brother Nathan.
Said Irfon: “We have over two hundred runners raising money for Tŷ Hafan this year – our largest ever cohort for us as a charity. So far, they’ve raised more than £60,000 for us and I am sure this figure will continue to grow.
“Thanks to every single person who is running the Cardiff Half for Tŷ Hafan. It’s a race for Wales and we’re a charity for Wales, so the link is strong and it’s a very important event for us.
“Our care costs are over £6 million a year – over £16,000 a day. So every pound raised is really important and goes towards providing highly valued support for families.
“I’d also like to thank Principality Building Society, as the main sponsors of the Cardiff Half Marathon, and for their fantastic support of Tŷ Hafan children’s hospice enabling us to have so many places for people to run for us. Thanks also to Run 4 Wales for their fantastic support, and for bringing this wonderful event to Cardiff.
Healthcare Support Worker Dawn, pictured right, who has just started her degree in paediatric nursing at the University of South Wales, said: “It’s my second time doing the Cardiff Half. I did it in 2019 first as a purely personal challenge but this time I am proud to run for Tŷ Hafan.
“I run 5ks regularly, but this is a bit more than 5k so I’m a little bit nervous. But I will complete it. You keep in your mind the reason you are doing it for. I don’t want a time. As Tesco says, every little helps.”
Jodana Weekley, Events Manager for Tŷ Hafan, said: “I’d like to wish everyone who is running the Cardiff Half for us on Sunday the very best of luck.
“When a child’s life will be short, Tŷ Hafan will walk alongside their family every step of the way – through life, death and beyond. We are thrilled to bits to have a record number of people running the Principality Cardiff Half Marathon for us this year.
“So far, our amazing Team Tŷ Hafan for the Cardiff Half 2024 have raised more than £60,000 which is truly incredible, and we are also extremely grateful to them for their ongoing support and enthusiasm.
“No parent ever imagines that their child’s life will be short. Sadly, this is the reality facing thousands of families in Wales. We can’t stop this happening, but together we can make sure that no one in Wales lives their child’s short life alone.
