Scott has been playing ice hockey for three years and first played for the Tŷ Hafan ice hockey team at the All Stars charity event in 2022.
What made you want to get involved in the All Stars charity ice hockey event?
I’ve watched the Cardiff Devils play ever since I was young and always wanted to play myself but, unfortunately, I didn’t have the chance.
In 2022 I was involved in a lot of running events for Tŷ Hafan and when the opportunity to play in the 2022 All Stars came about I jumped at the chance.
2025 is your first year as team captain – what does this involve?
As it’s my first year, I wanted to make some changes and make it my own. With local artist StuBob, we designed a brand new logo that’s more in keeping with the All Stars event.
Alongside this, I need to motivate the team to raise as much money as possible, take part in events and get as much exposure on the team as possible to spread the news and the work we are doing. I have also launched a merchandise line with supplier VX3.
What is special about raising money for Tŷ Hafan?
I have been lucky enough to visit the hospice a number of times and see the amazing work done there for children and families in need.
I wanted to get as many of the team to visit the hospice to see the reason we are playing for this charity and I’m so glad so many managed to attend. It makes my job as captain so much easier when the team are so motivated to raise as much money as possible because they have seen first-hand how far the money they have raised goes.
How much do you aim to raise for Tŷ Hafan this year?
I set a target at the start of this campaign to reach £21,000. I knew this would be a huge task with a mostly new team who have not played in an All Stars competition before. We knew if we hit this target we would have raised a total of £100,000 for Tŷ Hafan through All Stars since the start.
I’m delighted to announce that, including GiftAid, we have just gone over £23,000! This has been achieved by so much hard work from all the team.
What have you and the Tŷ Hafan ice hockey team been doing to raise so much money?
We have had some team members doing all sorts in order to raise money!
Emma Gordon is doing bake sales. Kyle Baker is cleaning out his closet and selling items on Vinted. Long-time player of the Ty Hafan team, Rick Strang, walked the length of Hadrian’s wall in his hockey kit, raising over £1,000 in the process. I also took part in Newport Half Marathon in hockey gear along with Joe Taylor, James Davies and David Elson. There is also a charity golf day that we are doing on the 13th June which we still have spaces for – you can register here.
I also want to take this opportunity to say a special thank you to all of our sponsors who have generously sponsored our kit and their logos will be on the playing kit of all our team.
Is doing well in the All Stars ice hockey tournament important to you?
Everyone will tell you that its all for the taking part, new opportunities and raising as much money as possible for the charities involved, which it is.
But this year, we are here to win! We’ve got a fantastic group with a real mix of backgrounds and abilities that I think can help us bring home the silverware.
I think the whole team are looking forward to the challenge and hitting the ice. We have two players who have international experience with Louise Adams representing Great Britain and Lokel Wong representing Hong Kong. On the other side we have Spencer Timothy who has never played before!
Is there good camaraderie with the other All Star ice hockey teams? What charities do they support?
Yes, it’s great! We have a real laugh and a lot of banter with the other captains of the teams, and on the weekend, there will be a lot of light-hearted fun.
They are supporting some great charities. These include the British Heart Foundation, Breast Cancer Now, Barbarians (Multiple Charities), Prostate Cancer, Mental Health Charities, Dreams Come True and Help for Heroes.
How can people get involved and support the Tŷ Hafan ice hockey team this year?
The big thing for me is exposure for the team, which will ultimately bring exposure for the charity and help support us.
Follow us on Instagram and buy the merchandise – we love to see as many people as possible wearing our gear.
If anyone wants to get involved in the golf day, they can register here. Of course, people can support us with donations on Just Giving, which we are so grateful for.
We are hoping this is going to be the biggest and best year yet!
Where can you get tickets for the All Stars tournament?
The tournament is on Saturday the 26th and Sunday the 27th of July from around 9 am each day.
It is £5 per person per day to come in and watch. Tickets can be bought on the door each day.
We would love to see as many people as possible come down wearing the Tŷ Hafan colours, shouting support for the team.
