What you’ll love about the Welsh 3 Peaks challenge

Great for your mind and body

The Welsh 3 Peaks challenge is an ideal way to push yourself physically while taking in the breathtaking natural beauty of these three Welsh mountains.

A huge achievement

Climbing three mountains in one day isn’t for the faint-hearted! Completing the Welsh 3 Peaks and raising money for Tŷ Hafan will leave you with a great sense of achievement.

Strengthen social connections and make new ones

Walking in teams, you’ll strengthen the connections you already have with your group while making new friends on the mountains. We’re all in this together!

Fundraising for a great cause

At the heart of this amazing challenge is the goal of fundraising for Tŷ Hafan. Right now, 9 out of 10 families in Wales who have a child with a life-shortening condition are living without the support of a children’s hospice. This means that thousands of families are living their child’s short life alone and often without any support. By taking part in the Welsh 3 Peaks for Tŷ Hafan, you make sure that families in Wales get the support they need through their child's life, death and beyond.

When you take on the Welsh 3 Peaks you’ll not only be part of this epic experience but most importantly you’ll be helping families like Jonathan and Catherine’s.

On March 1, 2024, they faced the unimaginable loss of their beloved son, Daniel, at just 16 years old. Just 14 weeks later Jonathan channelled some of his grief when he took on the Welsh 3 Peaks challenge.

“Despite it being hard and sometimes painful, doing the Welsh 3 Peaks challenge was possibly the best thing I did last year.

“I couldn’t fix my boy but I could raise money so that others who are going through the loss of a child could know their child is in the best of hands.”

How to fundraise

Hold a “Guess my time” sweepstake

Invite your friends and family to guess how long it will take your team to complete the Welsh 3 Peaks for the chance to win a prize in exchange for a donation to your online fundraising page. You could arrange your own prize or ask a local business to donate one.

Personalise your fundraising page

Personalising your fundraising page by including photos and updates on your training progress can encourage people to donate. Sharing your motivation for completing the Welsh 3 Peaks will help them understand why you’re taking part and why you’re taking part for Tŷ Hafan.

Share your fundraising page around pay day

Sharing your fundraising page around pay day when people have a bit more money to spare is a great way to help secure more donations.

The power of three

Since you’ll be climbing three mountains, why not ask people to sponsor you an amount per mountain or give up three cups of coffee (or pints!) and sponsor you what they save.

Ask your friends and family to share your fundraiser

Asking others to share your fundraising page can help you ger more donations from outside your social circle. This is also a way that people who can’t donate right now can support you.

How the funds you raise help

£25

could help a nurse provide reassurance and comfort to parents their time of greatest need.

£100

could provide a listening ear and practical support to a family trying to cope with the death of their child.

£500

could pay for a community bereavement hub, providing therapeutic memory making and specialist support for families unable to come to the hospice.

All participants should be aware that training is essential to achieve the basic fitness level required to complete this challenge safely, without injury.

To increase your fitness level in preparation for the challenge, we recommend that you steadily build up to regular exercise regimes in your preferred disciplines:

Jogging is a form of running at a slow or leisurely pace. Jogging regularly can increase your fitness level whilst placing less stress on your body than running.

Try to build up to 30-40 minutes jogging three times a week.

Regular swimming is great for building cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength and endurance whilst placing minimal strain on muscles.

Try to build up to 30 minutes swimming two to three times a week

Cycling is a practical aerobic activity that could be built in to your normal daily routine. Regular cycling builds muscular fitness as well as improving stamina

Try to build up to 30-60 minutes cycling two to three times a week – you may like to try cycling to work or to the shops!

Walking is also an activity that could be built in to your normal daily routine. Take the stairs instead of a lift or introduce an evening walk to your lifestyle.

Try to build up to 60-90 minutes brisk walking during the week, and three to five hours at weekends

Try to practice your walking on a mountain terrain in the lead up to the event. The Brecon Beacons provide an ideal platform to experience the environments that you will face during the challenge.

Frequently asked questions

All you need to know about taking on the Welsh 3 Peaks

Is the Welsh 3 Peaks Challenge a race?

No, the challenge is NOT a race. The challenge is to raise in excess of £1000 for Tŷ Hafan by successfully climbing all three peaks in one day. Please note that cut-off times apply and these are detailed in your briefing pack.

Is the Welsh 3 Peaks Challenge a guided walk?

No, you will need map-reading skills to complete the challenge. We provide marshal points and support throughout the event; however, they are there to provide safety support and not guide you. Therefore, you will need to have map-reading skills.

What happens if a team member drops out at the last minute?

A full team of four walkers must commence the challenge in Snowdon.

A team of fewer than four members cannot start the event, but every effort will be made to attach them to another team so they can commence the event.

Please inform the Tŷ Hafan events team of any team changes in the run-up to the event. Last-minute team changes can be made at registration in Snowdon on the Friday before the event

Why do we start the challenge at Snowdon and not Pen Y Fan?

The event route is set out as Snowdon first, then Cadair Idris and finally Pen Y Fan due to safety issues. For this reason we climb Snowdon first as it would be dangerous to leave the hardest mountain (Snowdon) until the end of the day when participants are tired.

Will the event go ahead in bad weather?

If the situation arises that we are unlucky enough to get weather that would make the climb dangerous for participants, the organiser may have to decide to alter the route.

This will be decided the afternoon before the event starts. We have only ever experienced one mountain closure in 27 years due to severe weather conditions; however, there is an alternative route available at Snowdon and Cadair Idris in case this happens again.

Can the routes taken on each mountain be altered?

No, you must take the routes outlined in the briefing pack. For safety reasons, you must follow the marshalled route.

Can the team driver join us up one of the mountains?

No, the driver has a responsibility to transport the teams safely between mountains.

Fundraising with Just Giving

Online fundraising is a great way to raise sponsorship.

Your team can all fundraise through one fundraising page, just make sure that you include all of your team members’ names so that we can attribute the sponsorship to each person.

When you set up an online fundraising page at www.justgiving.com, search for ‘Tŷ Hafan Welsh 3 Peaks challenge 2026’, which will link your page to the event.

The funds from Just Giving automatically come through to Tŷ Hafan, so once you have set up your page and share it with friends and colleagues, you don’t have to do anything else.
