No parent ever imagines that their child will die before them. But that is the unthinkable reality that thousands of families in Wales have to cope with every day.

Last year we published research which showed that the number of families in Wales who have a child whose life will be short had risen to just under 4,000 by 2019.

Very often those families are often struggling through the fear, uncertainty and exhaustion that comes from caring for a child who is seriously unwell without any care or support. Too often families are alone, afraid and isolated.

When every day could be their child’s last, families should be making memories together instead of facing each one with dread.
At Tŷ Hafan, we are determined to stop this. We believe that when a child’s life will be short, no family should have to live it alone.

We imagine a Wales where every child has access to their services they need. A Wales where every family has a choice about the care they have. A Wales where no family faces the death of their child alone.

Alfi’s Story

Alfi died peacefully in his dad’s arms on 1st March 2015, St. David’s Day and, poignantly, Sarah and Jason’s wedding anniversary.

“Since his passing, Tŷ Hafan has been a huge support to us. We continue to have support from our Family Support Worker and we know that Tŷ Hafan is there for us whenever and however we need them,†says Sara.

“We visit TÅ· Hafan on a regular basis. I can’t begin to describe what TÅ· Hafan means to us as a family, but one thing I do know is I will be eternally grateful for the memories they have allowed us to make and continue to make to this day.â€
